SUNRISE MEDICAL ELECTS LARRY C. BUCKELEW PRESIDENT; CHANDLER TO REMAIN AS CHAIRMAN AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

TORRANCE, Calif., Feb. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Sunrise Medical Inc. (NYSE: SMD) today announced that its board of directors has elected Larry C. Buckelew, currently president of the company's Bio Clinic subsidiary, to become president of Sunrise Medical effective July 1, 1993. Richard H. Chandler, currently chairman, president, and chief executive officer, will continue as chairman and chief executive officer. Between now and July, Sunrise will undertake a search for a new Bio Clinic president, which will include both internal and external candidates. Bio Clinic manufactures a broad spectrum of products used for the prevention and treatment of pressure sores in hospital, nursing home and home care settings.
Mr. Buckelew, 39, joined Sunrise Medical in 1986 as president of Bio Clinic after a successful 11-year career at Baxter International and American Hospital Supply Corp. in a variety of sales, marketing and operations management positions. He is a 1975 graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, with a bachelor of science degree in economics.
Commenting on the organizational change, Chandler said, "Larry Buckelew is a talented, dynamic business executive who has proven himself by delivering seven years of record sales and earnings at Bio Clinic, in each case exceeding plan. Equally important, Larry has participated in and helped implement the transformation in our corporate culture over that time period which has contributed so importantly to our record of accelerating corporate growth. Larry will have the presidents of our six core operating divisions reporting to him, while I will have the corporate staff functions plus Larry reporting to me. The change will free me up to concentrate more on issues of corporate strategy, acquisitions and international expansion. In no way, however, does it signal an intention on my part to leave or retire any time soon. Rather, this is a natural evolutionary step which provides the company with increased management depth and continuity here at the corporate office, as befits our increasing size, complexity and global scope."
Sunrise Medical designs, manufactures and markets internationally medical products used in the rehabilitation and recovery phases of patient care. Products include manual and electric wheelchairs, ambulatory and bath safety aids, patient-room beds and furnishings, and therapeutic mattresses for the management of pressure sores. Sunrise products are designed to meet the special needs of three groups of people: the disabled, the elderly and the recovering patient.
