SUNRISE MEDICAL ACQUIRES RVH S.A.R.L., FRENCH DISTRIBUTOR OF SOPUR WHEELCHAIRS

TORRANCE, Calif., Jan. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Sunrise Medical Inc. (NYSE: SMD) announced today that it has acquired Reha Vertrieb Humpert S.A.R.L. of Yerres, France ("RVH"), the exclusive master distributor of Sopur wheelchairs in France. Sopur GmbH, a subsidiary of Sunrise Medical, is one of Germany's leading manufacturers of custom lightweight wheelchairs. The acquisition of RVH was completed on January 11th based on an effective date of January 1, 1993. The purchase price was not disclosed.
RVH was founded six years ago by Bernd Humpert, a German citizen whose wife is French. Disabled himself and a long-time Sopur customer, Humpert used his knowledge of wheelchairs to start up a Sopur sales and distribution operation in Yerres, just south of Paris. Over the past three years, sales have grown at a compound rate of 36 percent yearly to a level of FF 8,500,000 ($1,530,000) in 1992.
The RVH operation consists of a distribution and customer service organization in Yerres and a field salesforce of six people. The company will be immediately renamed Sopur France, with Humpert remaining as general manager, reporting to Richard Kollisch, president of Sopur GmbH.
Commenting on the acquisition, Richard H. Chandler, chairman and president of Sunrise Medical, said, "The acquisition of RVH gives Sopur direct control over distribution in its most important export market. Bernd Humpert has done an outstanding job over the past six years in building Sopur's position in the French market for custom wheelchairs. He has also contributed many creative product ideas to Sopur GmbH and has functioned as a de facto member of their management team. This acquisition is another step in our strategy of extending our company's sales and distribution network throughout Europe and other major international markets."
Sunrise Medical designs, manufactures and markets internationally medical products used in the rehabilitation and recovery phases of patient care. Products include custom manual and electric wheelchairs, ambulatory and bath safety aids, patient-room beds and furnishings, and therapeutic mattresses for the management of pressure sores. Sunrise products are designed to meet the special needs of three groups of people: the disabled, the elderly and the recovering patient.
