SUNOCO TO INSTITUTE A CAR SCRAPPAGE PROGRAM THIS FALL; WILL PAY $700 FOR QUALIFIED PRE-1980 CARS TO HELP ELIMINATE WORST POLLUTERS FROM HIGHWAYS

PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Sun Company, Inc. (NYSE: SUN), manufacturer of Sunoco products, said today that it will institute a "car scrappage" program in the Philadelphia area to help reduce automotive emissions through the "early retirement" of older, high- polluting automobiles.
Sun Chairman and CEO Robert H. Campbell said the program, set to begin later in September, will improve air quality within the Philadelphia Air Basin. "At the same time it is expected to generate emission trading credits that could provide Sun with future operating flexibility," he said.
Campbell said Sun will begin with a pilot program in which it will purchase approximately 150 high-polluting, pre-1980 vehicles for $700 each. "Older cars are the worst polluters, accounting for more than two-thirds of automotive pollution in the Philadelphia Air Basin," Campbell noted.
He said Sun will test a sample of the vehicles to determine the effectiveness of the scrappage program in reducing the principal automotive pollutants -- carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds, and nitrogen oxides.
"We're still working out some of the details and reviewing the program with state and local government agencies, but we expect to announce the startup of the pilot program before the end of September," he said. "If it is successful, we will expand it to a large scale program."
Sun Company, headquartered in Philadelphia, operates five domestic refineries and is engaged principally in retail gasoline marketing in the Northeastern quadrant of the United States, the sale of lubricants and petrochemicals worldwide, and the operation of domestic pipelines and terminals. Sun also produces crude oil and natural gas internationally and is 55 percent owner of Suncor, a fully integrated Canadian oil company.
