STAMFORD, Conn., Aug. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- The South Korean Ministry of Communications today announced that a Sunkyong/GTE-led consortium has been selected as the winning consortium to receive an operating license to develop and operate a second mobile-cellular system in South Korea.
"We are delighted that our consortium has been selected," said Lee K. Toole, vice president-international for GTE Telecommunications Products & Services. "This decision was based on technological, financial and managerial capabilities. We are very pleased that our group was recognized as the strongest.
"Within the consortium, GTE will have the major responsibility to assist in building the network and to develop and manage information- management systems as well as provide marketing support," Toole added.
The license covers the entire country--serving a population of 44 million. GTE's percentage of ownership will be 10 percent.
Other major companies comprising the consortium include: Lucky Goldstar, Korea Electric Power Corp., Vodafone and Hutchison Telecom, as well as additional Korean companies.
