SUNDAY 7 Cinema / Jack Rosenthal on Jack Rosenthal Street If you've ever visited Manchester arts venue HOME, you may well have noticed that one of the surroundings streets is named Jack Rosenthal Street - a fitting tribute, of course, to the late, great Manchester-born dramatist Jack Rosenthal.
For the rest of January, however, those tributes to Rosenthal will also continue once you walk through the doors of HOME - as a new cinema season, Jack Rosenthal on Jack Rosenthal Street, begins this weekend.
One of Britain's most prolific and distinctive dramatists, the Cheetham Hill-born writer - who began his career writing for Coronation Street during the 1960s - scripted over 250 television plays and series, as well as several stage productions and feature films.
This special cinema season at HOME, starting on Sunday, promises to reflect that rich and diverse body of work. Highlights include a double-bill of TV plays, Bar Mitzvah Boy and The Evacuees, which were first screened for the BBC's Play For Today anthology series (Sunday, January 7). There's also a screening of his 1977 film, Spend Spend Spend, depicting the real-life story of pools winners Viv and Keith Nicholson (Monday 8 Jan), plus a chance to see his 1993 work, Wild Eyed and Legless, an intensely moving drama about a woman, played by Julie Walters, suffering from a degenerative illness (Thursday, January 18).
In addition, the season's programmers, Andy Murray and Andy Willis, will explore themes and ideas prevalent in Rosenthal's work, while arguing for the cultural significance of one of Manchester's most revered artistic sons (Thursday, January 11). | HOME / homemcr.org / 0161 200 1500 / Sunday, January 7 to Saturday, January 27 / Full programme and ticket info at - homemcr.org/event/ jack-rosenthal-jack-rosenthal-street
