SUNBELT NURSERY GROUP REPORTS RESULTS FOR THIRD QUARTER ENDED OCT. 31, 1992

FORT WORTH, Texas, Nov. 25 ~PRNewswire~ --Sunbelt Nursery Group, Inc. (AMEX: SBN), the leading specialty nursery retailer in six major metropolitan areas in Texas, Arizona and California, today announced results for the third quarter and nine months ended Oct. 31, 1992.
For the third quarter, the company had a net loss of $2,827,000 or $.33 per share, on sales of $26,683,000. For the nine months ended Oct. 31, 1992, sales were $110,538,000 and net income was $372,000, or $.04 per share.
Prior year earnings are not comparable due to the acquisition of Sunbelt by Pier 1 Imports, Inc. in the fourth quarter of 1990. The company was a wholly owned subsidiary of Pier 1 Imports until the October 1991 IPO that converted Sunbelt into a publicly held corporation.
"Although total sales were up nine percent and comparable store sales up one percent for the quarter, increased inventories caused by slow sales during the spring and summer resulted in larger than normal markdowns through the fall season. This gave us slimmer margins than expected during the third quarter," said Donald W. Davis, president and chief executive officer. "Also, expense levels increased as a result of newly opened and acquired stores. However, these new, larger stores are our future. We're positioned for good things to happen in 1993 when the spring selling season begins in February."
During the third quarter, Sunbelt acquired a large existing retail and wholesale nursery operation in Orange County, Calif. and opened a new store in San Antonio, Texas. In addition, Sunbelt recently announced the acquisition of a retail nursery with stores in Wichita Falls, Texas, and Lawton, Okla., plus the opening of four new or relocated stores in major Texas markets during the Thanksgiving-to- Christmas shopping period.
Sunbelt Nursery Group, Inc., an American Stock Exchange company, is the leading specialty nursery retailer in six major metropolitan areas in Texas, Arizona and California with 104 stores that feature nursery stock and lawn and garden products.
