SUNBELT NURSERY GROUP REPORTS FIRST QUARTER SALES
FORT WORTH, Texas, April 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Sunbelt Nursery Group,

Inc. (AMEX: SBN), the leading specialty retailer in six major metropolitan areas in Texas, Arizona and California, announced the sales for the first two months of its first fiscal quarter ending April 30, 1992, have been adversely affected by unusually heavy and frequent rains in all of its major markets.
"Rainfall in February and March continued the trend that began in September 1991. Total rainfall in Sunbelt's major market areas increased 84 percent over historical averages during the last seven months; 139 percent or nearly 2-1/2 times normal during February and March, the first two months of the fiscal year," said Donald W. Davis, president and chief executive officer.
"For the first two months of the first quarter, the Dallas area had 5.5 inches, up 27 percent; San Antonio 12.5 inches, up 292 percent; Houston 12.3 inches, up 110 percent; Phoenix 5.4 inches, up 288 percent; San Diego 7.3 inches, up 139 percent; and Los Angeles 9.8 inches, up 130 percent," said Davis.
"This pattern slowed planting and has contributed to a 14 percent same store sales decline for the first two months of Sunbelt's fiscal year which began in February 1992.
"The heavy spring rains have ended water rationing which should improve future sales in Southern California," said Davis.
Davis added, "Sunbelt's three-year renovation and expansion program has added one new store and completed two renovations since February. We have over 30 real estate deals in process and we are aggressively pursuing our renovation and expansion program."
