SUNBEAM-OSTER ELECTS ROGER W. SCHIPKE CHAIRMAN AND CEO

PROVIDENCE, R.I., Aug. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- The board of directors of Sunbeam-Oster Company, Inc. (NYSE: SOC), announced the election of Roger W. Schipke, 56, as chairman and chief executive officer, effective today.
Mr. Schipke will succeed Charles J. Thayer, 49, who served as chairman during the search process, continues as a board member and will assist with the management transition as vice chairman.
"Roger Schipke's recognized leadership in the consumer products industry, his global vision and proven management talents mean a great deal to the employees, shareholders and communities in which Sunbeam- Oster operates," said Mr. Thayer. "The board of directors is very pleased that Roger accepted the opportunity to continue building Sunbeam-Oster as a world-class consumer products company."
Mr. Schipke joins Sunbeam-Oster from the Ryland Group Inc., the home-building and mortgage banking company, where he has served as chairman, president and chief executive officer since 1990.
Prior to his joining Ryland, Mr. Schipke spent 29 years with General Electric, ultimately serving on the GE Corporate Executive Council as senior vice president in charge of GE's appliances division. He grew this business over a eight-year period from approximately $2 billion in revenues with primarily a domestic focus to an approximately $5.5 billion revenue global consumer products business with manufacturing facilities around the world.
"I am leaving the exciting and growing home-building and mortgage banking businesses at Ryland only for the opportunity afforded by Sunbeam-Oster to return to my roots in the consumer products business," Mr. Schipke said. "It has been a wonderful privilege to have worked with the talented and dedicated individuals that comprise the Ryland Group."
Roderick M. Hills, the board member who chaired the search committee, said, "Roger Schipke has the experience, talent and strategic vision required for Sunbeam-Oster to reach its full potential."
Prior to joining GE, Mr. Schipke served as a lieutenant junior grade in the U.S. Navy. He received a B.A. from Washington University in 1958, and an M.B.A. from New York University in 1961. Spalding University in Louisville, Ky., honored him for his community leadership with an honorary doctor of laws degree in 1984.
Mr. Schipke also serves on the board of directors for Brunswick Corporation, Legg Mason, Inc., and the Rouse Company.
