SUN SOLARIS CONNECTION AVAILABLE FROM XEROX ENGINEERING SYSTEMS

ROCHESTER, N.Y., March 9 /PRNewswire/ -- An enhanced parallel interface that allows users to connect Xerox Engineering Systems controllers and plotters with Sun workstations using the Solaris operating system was announced today.
The Model 116 has been improved so that Xerox plotters can take full advantage of the Solaris architecture. Solaris uses multitasking, multimedia object management facilities and is able to build true client/server applications. By offering a robust development environment, it helps software writers meet customer needs.
"It's expected that Solaris demand will peak during the first half of 1993," said Quinn Tran, director of product marketing, Xerox Engineering Systems. "The Model 116 positions Xerox to keep pace with this growing industry."
Solaris fills the gap between hardware performance and the utilization of that performance through software applications. This Sun operating system, which offers multivendor connectivity, satisfies end- user demands for sophisticated computing solutions. It also meets the needs of the heterogeneous computing environments found in corporate, educational and government offices.
The Model 116 transfers eight bits of data in parallel and also performs byte-to-byte handshaking for increased data integrity. The Model 116 supports data transfer rates of up to 600 kilobytes per second, depending on configuration.
Surface mount and VLSA technologies combine to make the Model 116 a highly reliable interface. Furthermore, the 166 offers switchless operation and automatic address detection by the host computer for fast installation. Test utilities reduce the possibility of installation errors.
Flexible connectivity is another feature of the Model 116 parallel interface. Plotters can be placed up to 1,000 feet (305 meters) away from the host.
The Model 116 will be available in the second quarter of 1993 from the Xerox Engineering Systems direct sales force and through authorized Xerox dealers. The product package will include a single printed circuit board, cable, software and user's guide.
Xerox Engineering Systems is the world's largest supplier of engineering copiers, wide-format printers and fax machines, raster plotters and engineering document management systems.
