SUN INTRODUCES SUN ELITE3D M6 GRAPHICS SUPPORT.

Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW) has boosted performance on its Ultra workstations, introducing its fastest workstations to date, the new Sun Elite3D m6 graphics support on its Ultra 10 workstation. Sun also redefined high-performance 3D graphics affordability with price cuts of up to 41 percent on its powerful, advanced Creator3D and Sun Elite3D graphics accelerators.

Unmatched Price/Performance

Sun's price cuts enhance the company's graphics price/performance and translate into savings for its customers. The company's top-of-the-line Sun Elite3D m6 graphics accelerator, for example, now priced 40 percent lower at $2,995, costs less than one-fourth the price of Hewlett- Packard's Visualize Fx6 graphics accelerator, yet delivers five times the price/performance. The Sun Elite3D m3 graphics card, reduced by 41 percent to $1,995, is now priced $855 less than Intergraph's Wildcat 4000 graphics and $5,000 less than HP's Visualize Fx4 graphics. Sun Elite3D m3 beats them both in price/performance by at least 25 percent.

Sun has also repositioned its popular Creator3D graphics as the entry-level 2D and 3D graphics solution supporting its superior Ultra Port Architecture-based graphics bus.

Coupled with the increased performance of even faster Ultra workstations, these price cuts prove once again that Sun consistently delivers fast, stable, scalable systems at aggressive prices to technical professionals who demand the best graphics workstation solutions at competitive prices.

"Lowering the price of our advanced 3D graphics and enabling even entry-level workstation customers to access the power of Sun Elite3D m6 graphics means that customers can put high-performance graphics workstations on even more engineering desktops," said Ken Okin, vice president and general manager, Workstation Products at Sun Microsystems, Inc. "Sun, well-known as a leader and innovator in the technical computing market, is again proving that it knows how to deliver the perfect blend of the powerful technologies our customers demand."

Faster Workstations, Better Values

Improved performance of its 64-bit UltraSPARC workstation family, including offering the industry's only built-in MPEG-2 software video playback system with the new release of ShowMe TV 1.3 media player and transmitter means that Sun is delivering new price/performance value to all levels of technical computing users.

ULTRA 5 WORKSTATION:

The entry-level Ultra 5, now shipping with a 360MHz UltraSPARC-IIi processor, which is 33 percent faster than the previous 270MHz base-level Ultra 5, and twice the disk capacity, is still priced at just $2,495. Enhancements to the Ultra 5 workstation have improved that system's performance on industry standard SPECint95 and SPECfp95 benchmarks by 33 and 24 percent, respectively.

ULTRA 10 WORKSTATION:

The Ultra 10 workstation, now available with a 440MHz UltraSPARC-IIi processor, is 22 percent faster than Sun's previous premium Ultra 10 configuration, but starts at $6,195, $1,800 less than the previous Sun Elite3D m3 configuration. Additionally, Sun's highest performance graphics solution, Sun Elite3D m6, which previously had been reserved for high-end workstations, is now supported in the company's entry-level graphics workstation. Today more users working in such technical markets as MCAD, GIS, EDA, and visualization and simulation can access the raw power of Sun's top-of-the-line graphics accelerator, capable of processing 5.9 million triangles per second, for under $7,500.

ULTRA 60 WORKSTATION:

Sun is adding a new model to the Ultra 60 line and is standardizing on 4MB cache in all Ultra 60 workstations. The new model Ultra 60 workstation, Sun's fastest workstation ever, includes a 450MHz processor and is priced starting at $12,995 with 256MB of memory. This new model is perfect for users working in CAD and visualization applications with large models, or for customers who require the Ultra 60 workstation's larger capacity and second high-bandwidth UPA-based graphics slot. Sun also announced price cuts of up to $1,600 for its current Ultra 60 models 1360 and 2360 workstations with Elite3D graphics. The 360MHz Ultra 60 workstation remains at the same low $9,995 price.

ULTRA 2 WORKSTATION:

Sun is also boosting CPU performance on the Ultra 2 workstation, which is now shipping with a faster 400MHz processor. With prices starting at $13,275, the new Ultra 2 workstation offers a high-end imaging, modeling and visualization applications.

Balance is Key

Sun's 64-bit Ultra workstation line is based on a balanced system architecture which marries processor, memory, graphics and I/O technologies to deliver powerful, stable, reliable workstations and superior graphics price/performance to all levels of computing user. Sun delivers complete scalability to the enterprise, from the $2,495 entry-level Ultra 5 workstation to the datacenter class 64-way Sun Enterprise (Starfire) 10000 server.
