The Sun Fire V1280 system is based on Sun's robust Solaris(TM) Operating Environment(OE) and features the Sun Open Net Environment (Sun(TM) ONE) software stack. With binary compatibility from one to 106 CPUs and the broadest application support in the industry, the Solaris OE helps enable customers to easily and reliably deploy applications on Sun systems from the Sun Fir e Blade Platform to the Sun Fire V1280 system to the high-end Sun Fire 15K system.
With its rack-optimized design, the Sun Fire V1280 system allows room in the same rack for an additional Sun Fire V1280 system and/or complementary components such as the Sun StorEdge(TM) 3300 Series of products, and the Sun StorEdge 3510 Fibre Channel array for direct and SAN attached storage, helping enable more CPUs per foot print and greater investment protection.
Sun Fire V1280 System Leads With Record-Breaking Performance and Scalability Not Available in Wintel Systems
The Sun Fire V1280 system offers one of the largest memory systems in a single 12-way UNIX(R) system, with 96 GB, and 9.6 GB/sec system bandwidth to help ensure that applications run smoothly, and provide the scalability need ed for applications that cannot scale in a Windows environment.
The system is designed to provide a secure, scalable and cost effective 64- bit platform for Wintel server consolidation and mainframe rehosting. Customers can consolidate multiple Windows database server applications onto a single Sun Fire V1280 system. Additionally, the Sun Fire V1280 system is an ideal mainframe alternative platform, well-suited for rehosting applications currently running on low-end OS/390 mainframes like IBM's z800.
The Sun Fire V1280 system delivered world record results on the SPECjAppSer ver2001 benchmark and demonstrated near-linear scalability on the SPEC CPU2 000 benchmark.

Sun today also announced the Mobile Location Services (MLS) Reference Architecture. Targeted at enterprises, the MLS Reference Architecture helps enable rapid deployment of revenue-generating mobile location services, such a s a "Point of Interest" finder to locate a restaurant en route, or an "Asset Tracker" that allows managers to track and route delivery vehicles.
Scalable from thousands up to millions of subscribers, the MLS Reference Architecture is a completely tested, tuned and documented implementation that leverages Sun ONE, with Sun Fire V1280, V480 and 280R systems, and Sun StorEdge 3510 Fiber Channel arrays running in the Solaris 9 OE. The MLS Reference Architecture is based on open, industry standards, and includes hardware, middleware and software from partners including Foundry Networks, LocatioNet and Oracle Corporation.
Pricing and Availability for the Sun Fire V1280 System
The Sun Fire V1280 system is available immediately with a starting list price of $79,995 (USD) for: 4 x 900 MHz UltraSPARC III Cu processors, 8 GB of memory, 2 x integrated Gigabit Ethernet ports, 2N power supplies, DVD-ROM, and 2 x 36 GB hard drives. Solaris OE license is included.
These new products are scheduled to become available through Sun's direct s ales force and Sun's iForce partners worldwide, including GE Access, MOCA, eServ and Data Systems Worldwide. The systems also can be pre-configured and integrated at Sun prior to shipping through the Sun(SM) Customer Ready Systems (CRS) program.
