SUN ANNOUNCES SUCCESSFUL TEST OF APPRAISAL WELL IN NORTH SEA
RADNOR, Pa., June 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Sun Co.'s (NYSE: SUN) announced today that a joint venture in which its North Sea subsidiary, Sun Oil Britain Limited, has a 28.26 percent interest has successfully tested an appraisal well on North Sea Block 16/12a.
The well produced 42 degree API oil at a rate of 5,100 barrels per day through a 48/64-inch choke. The well also produced 10.4 million cubic feet of gas per day. The test was conducted over the interval 14,406 feet to 14,565 feet in the Upper Jurassic Brae Formation of the South Birch Field in the UK North Sea block 16/12a. Wellhead pressure was 1,940 psi.
The joint venture operator -- LASMO North Sea with a 58.85 percent interest -- said it is "extremely encouraged" by the results of the appraisal well, which was originally drilled to 15,454 feet before being suspended prior to testing when the drilling rig suffered storm damage in October 1991. The well was re-entered in May of 1992.
Sun said this is one of a number of successful wells in Block 16/12a in which it has participated. The company said further drilling in the block is ongoing, with the ultimate goal of commercial development drawing closer with this recent success.
Other participants in the joint venture are Hardy Oil & Gas (UK) Limited (8.5 percent) and British Gas Exploration and Production Limited (4.39 percent).
