SUMMIT HEALTH REPORTS INCREASES IN FIRST QUARTER RESULTS
BURBANK, Calif., Oct. 21 /PR Newswire/ -- Summit Health Ltd. (NASDAQ: SUMH) today reported increases in the company's fiscal 1993 first quarter ended Sept. 30, 1992. Net revenue for the quarter rose 15 percent to $121,792,000, compared to $106,092,000 recorded in the first quarter of fiscal 1992. The increase was fueled primarily by outpatient growth and a 3.4-percent rise in inpatient admissions. Net income increased 55 percent to $3,817,000, or 12 cents per share, compared to $2,462,000, or 8 cents per share, during the first quarter of last year.
"Our successful outpatient strategies continue to drive the company's revenues and earnings," said Don Amaral, chief executive officer of Summit Health. "For the first quarter, our revenue from outpatient operations increased 23 percent, outpatient visits rose 22 percent, outpatient surgeries grew 22 percent and emergency visits were up 14 percent, all on a 'same-store' basis.
"In keeping with this focus on outpatient growth, we are proud to announce that on Oct. 20, 1992, we opened the Arizona Diagnostic and Surgery Center, our first internally generated free-standing 'surgicenter,'" continued Amaral. "This 12,800-square-foot facility is located on the Mesa General Hospital Campus and incorporates three surgery suites, recovery, G.I. lab, endoscopy and more.
"With the addition of this new center, we now have 62 surgery suites company-wide, with at least five more suites to be added this fiscal year," added Amaral. "Our evolutionary strategy of utilizing our existing facilities as 'surgical centers with beds,' combined with increasing outpatient capacity through the addition of free-standing surgicenters, positions Summit Health as a solution to some of the larger problems facing today's health care decision-makers."
Summit Health Ltd. provides high quality health care services to niche markets through 12 acute care hospitals with 1,629 licensed beds and two free-standing outpatient surgery centers with a total of 62 surgery suites. Summit Health, through its subsidiary Health Choice Arizona, a Medicaid HMO, insures 16,800 lives in the state of Arizona. Also, through its majority-owned Summit Care subsidiary (NASDAQ: SUMC), the company provides health care services to the elderly through 17 skilled nursing centers with 2,228 licensed beds and four retirement centers with 468 beds. The company's facilities are located in California, Arizona, Texas and Iowa.
