SUMMIT HEALTH LTD. CREATES NEW AMBULATORY SURGERY SUBSIDIARY; SUMMIT AMBULATORY NETWORK ACQUIRES FIRST OUTPATIENT SURGERY CENTER
BURBANK, Calif., Sept. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Summit Health Ltd. (NASDAQ: SUMH) has created a new ambulatory surgery subsidiary to own and operate free standing outpatient surgery centers, it was announced here today by Donald J. Amaral, president and chief executive officer of Summit Health. Amaral also announced that the new subsidiary, Summit Ambulatory Network, has acquired its first facility, the Magnolia Outpatient Surgery Center in Westminster, Orange County, Calif.
"One of our major growth strategies is to increase ambulatory and outpatient surgery programs at Summit Health's 12 hospitals and in fiscal 1992 we increased revenues from these programs by 29 percent over fiscal 1991. To expand our focus on this niche of the health care market, we have formed Summit Ambulatory Network, which will build a business of free standing outpatient surgery centers," said Mr. Amaral.
The Magnolia Center was purchased from a physician group. Terms of the Center's purchase were not disclosed.
The Maqnolia Center provides a variety of minimally-invasive surgery treatments that are, in many cases, fast becoming the standard surgical option. Requiring highly-trained physicians and special instruments, minimally-invasive techniques enable many surgeries to be safely performed on an outpatient basis without an overnight stay, thereby reducing costs for all parties involved.
The Magnolia Center is state licensed and Medicare certified and features two operating rooms and six licensed recovery beds. More than 80 physicians are on its medical staff. In order to best serve the surrounding community, the Center's staff is fluent in various languages including Vietnamese, Chinese, Spanish and English.
Doctors at the Magnolia facility are currently performing outpatient surgeries including laparoscopic and endoscopic procedures. Should patients require a full-service hospital stay, Doctors Hospital of Santa Ana and Santa Ana Hospital Medical Center, both Summit Health properties, are minutes away.
Summit Health Ltd. provides high quality health care services to niche markets through 12 acute care hospitals and 56 surgery suites and generated more than fifty percent of its fiscal 1992 revenue through outpatient services. Through its majority-owned Summit Care subsidiary (NASDAQ: SUMC), the company also provides health care services to the elderly through 17 skilled nursing centers. The company's facilities are located in California, Arizona, Texas and Iowa.
