SUITE SUBSTITUTE: AN EXHIBITION OF

Exhibition Runs June 1 to July 4, 1993, Featuring
Gilbert & George, Antony Gormley, Richard Long,
Tatsuo Miyajima, Bruce Nauman and James Turrell
HONOLULU, April 9 /PRNewswire/ -- The Hotel du Rhone, the only listed modern building in Geneva, is marking the completion of an extensive program of refurbishment by mounting a loan exhibition of innovative contemporary art which will feature major works by six significant international artists. They are Gilbert & George, Antony Gormley, Richard Long, Tatsuo Miyajima, Bruce Nauman and James Turrell. The exhibition coincides with and is, in many respects, the catalyst for Geneva's "Porte Ouverte," to be held on Saturday, June 5, and Sunday, June 6, when Le Centre d'Art Contemporain will preview its survey of the art of Boyd Webb and the city's commercial galleries will be making special and extended opening hours for the entire weekend. Together, these events, which fit neatly into the international art calendar just ahead of the Venice Biennale and the Basel Art Fair, are designed to bring attention to Geneva as a new and exciting place for contemporary art.
The Hotel du Rhone's exhibition, "Suite Substitute," takes its title from a small but historically important neon sign created by Nauman in 1968. Comprising a disarmingly simple statement in two words which are programmed to flash in sequence, it was Nauman's humorous and mildly ironic comment upon a growing public appetite for art. As its subtitle, "Art to Replace Your Favourite Furniture," implies, "Suite Substitute" was intended to stand in for, or take the place of, a sofa, armchair or other piece of furniture in a collector's room. In a delicious twist which Nauman might not have imagined, but which is entirely appropriate to the function of the building in which the exhibition is being held, "Suite Substitute" reminds that a suite in a hotel substitutes for a guest's own home.
There, indeed, is the theme for the exhibition, a collection of works of art which, by the nature of their scale or physical presence, challenge, dominate or replace the fixtures and decorations which guests expect to find in a hotel. At the Hotel du Rhone, art will be placed in the lobby, in the cloakroom and in the ladies' powder room. In a city where numbers are counted without interruption, a major light emitting diode installation by Miyajima will operate from a bay facing the desk of the hotel's cashiers. A mighty 10-meter white onyx line by Long will spread along a marble gallery beside the hotel's ballroom. Long has also created a new slate circle which will be previewed in the exhibition. Gormley has designed an installation of three large lead figures, each of which is based upon a cast of the artist's own body. They will be arranged along a platform above the tea lounge. Three important early photo pieces by Gilbert & George include "The Building," which dates from 1978 and presents the two artists flanking an office block in the international modern style, of which the Hotel du Rhone is a superior example. "Rayzor," one of Turrell's most sensuous and spectacular shallow space constructions, originally conceived in 1968 and mixing daylight with fluorescent light in a soft and hazy radiance, will be recreated in the hotel's ballroom.
Roger Bevan, contemporary art correspondent for The Art Newspaper, and Beverly Anastopolis have curated "Suite Substitute" for the Hotel du Rhone.
