SUGARLOAF, Maine, Nov. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Sugarloaf/USA, Maine's largest destination ski resort, is improving and expanding as it heads into its 43rd ski season. Located in the western mountains of Maine, Sugarloaf is known for its big mountain ski experience with more vertical than many Colorado resorts. Like many Colorado resorts, Sugarloaf offers a complete on-mountain village with shops, restaurants, health clubs, condos, hotels, a grocery store, and a wide variety of children's programs.
Sugarloaf is coming off its best year ever, posting a record 16 percent growth within the past year alone and a 21 percent growth in daily ticket sales. This represents the largest growth record of any ski area in New England, and marks the seventh of consecutive record-level years.
As the leader in snowmaking technology, Sugarloaf was first in high pressure air systems in the U.S., pumping 150 pounds per square inch (psi) of air three years ago. This year, to further improve the snowmaking system, Sugarloaf is installing airless guns and new HKD Tower Guns to make the system even more efficient and allow a ten percent overall increase in snowmaking capacity.
Last year, Sugarloaf installed snowmaking in the infamous Sugarloaf Snowfields, the only above-treeline, lift serviced skiing in the East. This year, to further improve the skiing experience in this legendary terrain, even more acres of terrain will be covered by snowmaking.
To even further improve the snow surface, Sugarloaf is increasing its grooming fleet with the addition of two new machines: one new Bombardier and a new Kassbohrer Piston Bully. Sugarloaf now has a total of 12 machines in its grooming fleet, including nine Bombardiers and three Pisten Bully 200's. This extensive fleet of machines allows the grooming crew to groom the entire mountain each night. New Flextiller technology has been purchased for more precise grooming capabilities than at other areas. Two of the groomers are winch cats.
Three new intermediate trails will be added to the area just west of the Double Runner Chairlift. These trails will run between Double Bitter and Tote Road, offering fairly narrow, woodsy, classic New England skiing terrain.
A new restaurant in the Base Lodge, to be called Chick N' Pitch, will be added to the already extensive list on on-mountain eateries. This sit-down restaurant will feature grilled chicken and barbecue. Healthy food at a good value and good service will be the main attractions of this new eatery.
Sugarloaf's on-mountain restaurant, Bullwinkle's, will be doubled in size this year. The menu will be expanded to include more offerings, and restrooms will be added. This restaurant is a rustic log cabin- style eatery featuring hearty-skiers' food that fuels the body and warms the soul.
Employees at Sugarloaf are continuing to set the pace for the industry in the service excellence area, with "Snow Country" and "Ski" magazine both ranking Sugarloaf number one in the East for service for the last five years. Sugarloaf employees are trained by professional hospitality consultants to "dazzle and amaze their guests" and to constantly exceed expectations in all areas of resort operation.
All adults on Sugarloaf lodging packages receive free alpine or nordic group ski lessons when their vacation is booked through the 1-800-THE-LOAF reservations line. Sugarloaf's Ski School, which has been ranked the number one Ski School in the East by the readers of "Snow Country" magazine, offers Mountain Experience lessons on a daily basis to all adults staying on a lodging package. Mountain Experience is a two hour group lesson designed to bring skiers to a new level of competence and confidence, to increase their enjoyment of the sport, and to familiarize them with the amenities of the resort and the natural beauty of the area. Instructors act as guides, taking skiers to the best terrain for their ability. The classes are very active, covering a great deal of terrain in each session.
Sugarloaf offers inclusive lift and lodging packages with more amenities at the lowest price for on-mountain lodging at any major ski resort in the East. Sugarloaf lodging packages all include lift tickets, daily adult alpine or nordic ski school lessons, privileges at the luxurious Sugartree Sports and Fitness Center, and activities for children six nights per week. The packages are easy to book by talking to one of Sugarloaf's professional vacation consultants at 1-800-THE-LOAF. A three day midweek ski vacation from Jan. 4 through April 4, excluding holidays, in a one bedroom slopeside condo would cost only $75 per person, double occupancy in a two-bedroom condominium, for lifts, lodging, lessons, sports and fitness club, and the quality guest service which has been ranked number one in the East by readers of "Snow Country" magazine!
