SUGARLOAF ANNOUNCES MAJOR SNOWMAKING IMPROVEMENTS

 SUGARLOAF ANNOUNCES MAJOR SNOWMAKING IMPROVEMENTS
CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine, Aug. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- The famous

Sugarloaf Snowfields, the only above-treeline, lift-serviced skiing terrain in the East, will be the site of a major expansion of the snowmaking system and the focus of Sugarloaf/USA's capital improvements for the '92/'93 season. Traditionally the Snowfields are only skiable in the springtime, when there is an abundance of heavy natural snowfall. With the addition of snowmaking, skiers will be able to enjoy these unique Snowfields on a regular basis throughout the entire season. Two other trails will be part of the snowmaking system expansion. Snowmaking will be added to Wedge, a steep expert trail leading down from the Snowfields, and Skidder, Sugarloaf's premier bump trail and one of the most challenging bump trails in the East. Skidder will also be enhanced by widening and other trail contour improvements.
In addition to expanding the snowmaking coverage to the point where 90 percent of the mountain's total terrain is served by the snowmaking system, the capacity to make snow will increase by 20 percent with the addition of a new air compressor and a new water pump.
"The most spectacular skiing in the East is from the summit snowfields on our mountain," stated Sugarloaf Ski School Director Paul Brown. "We now offer the most variety of terrain serviced by snowmaking of any area in the country."
Grooming will improve with the addition of two new state-of-the-art grooming machines. One will be an advanced winch cat, devoted to grooming the steepest slopes and trails, and the other is an all-purpose grooming machine which will enhance the capabilities of the entire fleet.
Because of an ongoing capital improvements program, Sugarloaf/USA has received widespread acclaim over the past few years. The resort was recently ranked the top resort in the East for total ski experience by a readers' rating in the September's Snow Country magazine. Specifically cited were children's programs and customer service. The readers gave four stars to snow surface, service, food, child care and ski school.
Lodging on the mountain ranges from studio to five-bedroom condominiums, and the charming Sugarloaf Inn. For reservations, call the professional vacation consultants at 1-800-THE-LOAF.
