SUCCESSFUL TESTS BY PRATT & WHITNEY, AIRBUS INDUSTRIE OF NEW PW4168 ENGINE ARE RUNNING AHEAD OF SCHEDULE

TOULOUSE, France, Nov. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Pratt & Whitney's powerful PW4168 engine, the most recently FAA-certified member of the PW4000 family, has successfully completed 15 flights on Airbus Industrie's new A330 aircraft, Pratt officials said today.
"We are delighted by the progress we are making with Airbus Industrie on the PW4168 program," said Ed Crow, senior vice president for Pratt & Whitney's large commercial engine business.
"The testing is running well ahead of schedule, with very encouraging results," Crow said. "Our engineers and the test pilots report that both our engine and the aircraft are performing extremely well."
Flight testing of the PW4168 began on Oct. 14, 1993, with a three-and-a-half-hour flight from Toulouse that covered the entire flight envelope.
Subsequent flights, some lasting more than seven hours, have included tests of engine restarts up to 20,000 feet, high-speed performance testing and acceleration and deceleration at altitudes up to 35,000 feet. About 370 hours of tests are planned for A330/PW4168 certification.
The PW4168 has already logged some 90 hours of in-flight testing so far -- putting the test program about two weeks ahead of schedule -- with testing slated to continue through early next year. Final aircraft certification is expected in April, 1994, with first deliveries to Malaysia Airlines and Thai International scheduled to occur in the summer of 1994.
Other customers for the A330 with PW4168 engines include LTU International, Euralair, International Lease Finance Corporation and Northwest Airlines.
The engine, featuring a 100-inch fan, was specially developed for Airbus Industrie. Certified at 68,000 pounds of thrust, the powerplant is capable of producing more than 74,000 pounds of thrust to meet all future A330 requirements.
"The years of work with our colleagues at Airbus Industrie are now bearing fruit in a remarkable combination of engine and aircraft that will set new performance standards around the world," Crow said.
