SUBARU OF AMERICA NAMES GEORGE T. MULLER PRESIDENT AND CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER

SOA Reorganization To Emphasize Leaner And More Focused Organization
CHERRY HILL, N.J., July 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Subaru of America, Inc. (SOA) has taken steps to stabilize its position within the auto industry and refocus its direction back toward its roots as an early pioneer in automotive niche marketing.
According to SOA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Takeshi Higurashi, these measures include naming SOA Executive Vice President George T. Muller to the position of president and chief operating officer, and downsizing the company's national workforce. The appointment of Muller to the president's position coincides with the announced retirement earlier this month of Charles F. "Chuck" Worrell, SOA's other executive vice president.
According to Higurashi, Muller's primary responsibility will be to return Subaru to a profitable position through refocusing its identity as a successful niche marketer of durable and reliable front and all- wheel drive vehicles, particularly station wagons, under a reorganized and leaner organization.
"We've gotten sidetracked over the past few years and have tried to be all things to all consumers," said Muller. "Our message to consumers became fragmented and unclear. As a result, we've lost our identity and are not satisfied with what we've become. We are not a mass marketer and it's time we refocus on the core strengths of our products and dealer body in building a stronger and more viable franchise."
To accomplish this, SOA will reorganize its internal structure to operate more efficiently and will be recruiting a new vice president of marketing to rebuild its image within the marketplace.
"We are very pleased to have George in this new capacity," said Higurashi. "He has an excellent understanding of the current situation and will provide the leadership that is necessary."
Muller first joined SOA in 1979 as manager of Operating Procedures and was promoted through the ranks where he has served as the company's chief financial officer, and most recently as the executive vice president with the shared responsibilities of chief operating officer with Worrell.
Subaru of America, Inc. is the exclusive U.S. marketer of Subaru products manufactured by Fuji Heavy Industries, Ltd., of Japan. The company is celebrating its 25th anniversary of selling Subaru vehicles in the United States. Headquartered in Cherry Hill, SOA markets its Justy, Loyale, Impreza, Legacy and SVX vehicles as well as replacement parts and accessories through a network of company-owned and independent distributors who serve more than 700 dealers nationwide.
