CHERRY HILL, N.J., Oct. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Subaru of America will add the all-new Impreza series of subcompact front- and all-wheel drive sedans and wagons to its 1993 lineup. Introduced today in Japan by Fuji Heavy Industries, Ltd., SOA's parent company, the Impreza makes its initial American showing Saturday, Oct. 31, at the New England International Automobile Show in Boston.
The Impreza (which will carry the same name in the United States and Japanese markets) aims to establish a class-leading balance of performance, comfort and safety while also offering trademark Subaru value and durability. The Impreza sedans and wagons will arrive Feb. 1993 in dealer showrooms and will be sold alongside the Justy, Loyale, Legacy and SVX lines.
According to Chuck Worrell, Subaru executive vice president, lessons learned in designing the Legacy and the flagship SVX coupe played an important role in the development of the Impreza.
"By borrowing the outstanding Legacy platform and many of the technological advances implemented in the SVX, the Impreza will compete in the subcompact segment armed with class-leading levels of performance, value, quietness and safety."
Impreza sedans and wagons will be offered in L and LS trim levels, in front- and all-wheel drive and with five-speed manual and four-speed electronic automatic transmissions.
Superior traction is achieved through a host of design considerations coupled with either of the front-wheel (FWD) or two all- wheel drive (AWD) systems. Both FWD and AWD Impreza models benefit from the horizontally opposed engine's low center of gravity, a lock on first gear for slippery roads, the unique four-speed electronic automatic transmission and on LS models, four-wheel disc brakes with ABS.
In addition to its superior traction and structural integrity, safety features include standard driver's-side bag, adjustable three- point manual seat belts and the unique Subaru hill holder which affords manual transmission-equipped models easy first gear starts on steep inclines.
The Impreza is powered by a 1.8 liter, 110-horsepower, four-valve, SOHC, horizontally opposed aluminum four-cylinder engine with multi- point fuel injection. The engine system was designed for superior low- end power for daily driving and ease of maintenance and serviceability for low-cost ownership.
To achieve leading levels of ride comfort, handling and control, the Impreza features a four-wheel independent suspension, power rack-and- pinion steering and power brakes. Impreza L models are equipped with front disc and rear drum brakes while LS models incorporate four-wheel disc brakes with four-channel ABS.
The suspension's negative scrub and anti-dive and anti-squat geometry help give both the front- and all-wheel drive equipped models excellent stability.
Crucial in the subcompact segment is utilization of available interior space, and the Impreza excels in that department, with class- leading front legroom and headroom and total EPA interior volume.
All Subaru automobiles, including the Impreza, are sold and serviced by the nearly 730 dealers nationwide and are covered by a three-year, 36,000-mile limited warranty. For rust perforation coverage, the limited warranty is five years with unlimited mileage.
