STUDY REPORTS UNITED STATES LEADER IN SALES, PROJECTS AND OWNERS; INDUSTRY LEADERS CREDIT IMAGE BOOST FOR TIMESHARE GROWTH

 WASHINGTON, Sept. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- According to a newly released study, the United States is the worldwide leader in development and sales of timeshare resorts. The study, "The Resort Timeshare Industry in the United States," reports that there are currently 870 timeshare projects in the United States with an historical sales volume of $13 billion.
 "One of the primary reasons the timesharing industry continues to grow and attract value-conscious consumers is the public's confidence with the industry," said Tom Franks, president of the American Resort Development Association (ARDA). "Consumers today recognize that timeshares mean quality, family oriented accommodations that provide a hedge against inflation and the rising cost of alternative accommodations."
 On a worldwide basis it is estimated that over 2.5 million households now own a timeshare interval in over 3,000 timeshare projects. It is also estimated that the worldwide sales volume in 1992 approached $4 billion.
 Timeshare owners in the United States number 1.5 million households representing about 60 percent of all timeshare owners in the world. There are currently 250 projects in sales and marketing generating over $1.3 billion in sales during 1992. Florida accounts for almost 30 percent of the country's historical sales volume and over 40 percent of the total in 1992. California accounts for almost 10 percent of the historical sales volume and about 14 percent of the 1992 total.
 "The entire world is looking to the U.S. for trends affecting the industry including more flexible buying options, hotel companies' interest in developing timeshare resorts and buying habits of American consumers," said Deborah Newell, chairman of ARDA. "The industry is evolving to accommodate the mainstream vacation patterns of Americans. We expect our current growth trends to continue for the foreseeable future."
 The study also analyzed the timeshare industry's contributions to the country's economy. Some of the highlights include:
 -- The timeshare industry contributes more than $8.6 billion to the
 country's economy;
 -- During the next 10 years, the average timeshare owner expects to
 return to their home resort 4.5 times as opposed to 1.8 times if
 they had not owned a timeshare in the area;
 -- In 1992, the year-round occupancy rate in all timeshare projects
 was over 80 percent as compared to 60 percent in the hotel
 industry;
 -- The average timeshare vacationing party spends 8.1 nights while
 on the timeshare vacations;
 -- The timeshare industry generates almost 60 million visitor days
 in the United States;
 -- The average timeshare visitor spends over $1,400 of consumer
 expenditures for total direct consumer expenditures of almost
 $2.8 billion annually. An additional $1 billion is spent
 annually on travel expenditures; and
 -- The timeshare industry is responsible for creating over 35,000
 jobs and approximately $830 million of payroll.
