STUDENTS, PARENTS INFORMED OF BUS STRIKE CONTINGENCY PLANS
SEATTLE, Dec. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- The following was released today by the Seattle Public Schools:
The Seattle Public School District today began advising parents and students of contingency plans that will be used if Laidlaw Transit Inc. and Teamsters Union 763 do not reach agreement on a new contract. A work stoppage affecting 17,500 of Seattle's 44,500 students could occur as early as Wednesday if an agreement is not reached.
Seattle Schools will remain open and will operate on a regular schedule. Middle and high school students will be provided with Metro bus tokens, however parents will need to provide transportation for elementary, pre-school and special education students who use Laidlaw services.
The following letter was to be duplicated and sent home with students today. A telephone hotline number for parents is provided in the letter. December 2, 1991 Dear Parent or Guardian:
We have been advised this morning by Laidlaw Transit Inc. that they still have not reached a contract agreement with the Teamsters Union, Local 763, which represents Laidlaw bus drivers who serve the students in Seattle Public Schools. We sincerely hope that this situation will be resolved soon, and we also want to provide you with the most updated information we have about this situation.
It is possible that a work stoppage may occur as a result of the unsuccessful contract negotiations. Laidlaw provides the largest share of transportation for the students in our school district, and a work stoppage by school bus drivers would adversely affect our ability to provide transportation for our students. We have been informed that if this work stoppage occurs, it would not happen before Dec. 4, 1991.
 If a work stoppage occurs:
 1. Seattle Public Schools will remain open and will operate on a regular schedule.
 2. Transportation services will continue for students already assigned to Metro (City) buses, Metro elementary routes: 700 through 760; Metro secondary routes: 800 through 860; and Metro bus pass riders.
 3. Metro bus tokens will be provided for middle school and high school students.
 4. Parents will need to provide transportation for elementary, pre-school, and special education students who would otherwise be transported by Laidlaw. If a work stoppage occurs, we are encouraging PTSA's to take the lead in arranging carpools for students.
As soon as we learn a definite time for any work stoppage, we will alert the media. Also, if you would like updated recorded information, please call 298-7899 or 298-7199.
We sincerely hope that a work stoppage does not occur, and appreciate your patience and understanding during this difficult time.
 Sincerely,
 William Kendrick
 Superintendent
