STUDENT TECHNOLOGY TEAMS COMPETE AS WESTEC EXPO OPENS

LOS ANGELES, March 18 /PRNewswire/ -- With its wings spanning eight feet, a student-designed King Cobra fighter plane lands at the L.A. Convention Center this week as the WESTEC '93 Manufacturing Exposition opens Monday, March 22, and runs through Thursday, March 25.
 Competing with Manufacturing Technology
The 1/4-scale fighter plane was developed by students using computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) and solids modeling techniques with the goal of achieving speeds in excess of 200 mph, to break world records previously set by models.
The plane will compete against other student-designed products ranging from boats to belt buckles, during the WESTEC CAD/CAM Robotics Challenge Contest, taking place Monday from 1-5 p.m.
The contest challenges university students to use CAD/CAM technology to improve design and manufacturing. Other highlights will include demonstrations of machines that perform three-dimensional contouring for aerodynamic body designs; and CAD/CAM software that detects and plots the radar path on Coast Guard boats for greater passenger safety.
California schools participating include: CalPoly State University -- San Luis Obispo; CalPoly State University -- Pomona; California State University -- Chico; California State University -- Fresno; and California State University -- Long Beach; Los Angeles Pierce College -- Woodland Hills; ITT Technical Institute -- West Covina; Miracosta College -- Cardiff; and Rancho Santiago College -- Santa Ana.
 Contest Hours:

 Judging (Room 502A, 2nd Level, LACC) 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
 Awards Ceremony 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Following the contest, students can visit the WESTEC '93 Exposition which would fill more than three football fields. The show's 565 exhibitors -- including more than 200 California companies, will display more than 5 million pounds of equipment.
Celebrating its 30th anniversary, WESTEC is North America's largest annual metalworking and manufacturing event. The event traditionally draws more than 30,000 executives from North America, Europe and the Pacific Rim. Exhibits showcase machine tools, material handling, quality control, CAD/CAM and assembly and finishing equipment.
