Byline: from Peter Allen in Paris

A DRIVER was under arrest last night after a British student was killed and another badly injured as they ran across a motorway in France.

The pair were trying to dash to a nightclub in the early hours yesterday.

A 23-year-old died at the scene while the second, aged 22, suffered broken legs.

Seconds earlier the two were spotted in the central reservation of the busy A9 in Montpellier near the Mediterranean coast.

A car hit them as they tried to run across the second three-lane carriageway.

The driver, in his 30s, was treated for shock and arrested on his release from hospital on suspicion of manslaughter.

The motorway was briefly closed. Police are not naming the pair until their families in England are informed.
