STROH OFFERS ADDITIONAL SUPPORT FOR IOWA RELIEF EFFORT WITH DONATION FROM AMERICAN NATIONAL CAN COMPANY

DETROIT, July 16 /PRNewswire/ -- The Stroh Brewery Company is extending its support to victims of the flooding in Des Moines, Iowa, by shipping an additional 240,000 cans of pure sparkling water from its St. Paul, Minn., brewery to the disaster site beginning tonight. Earlier this week, Stroh shipped 110,000 32-oz. bottles of fresh drinking water from St. Paul to Des Moines in response to reports that Des Moines' water treatment plant was under water and inoperative.
Stroh packaged the second shipment of water today in 12-oz. aluminum cans donated by American National Can Company (ANC). The cans then will be shipped on trays, donated by Weyerhaeuser Paper Company, to Des Moines where they will be distributed to local residents free of charge by American Red Cross disaster relief teams.
"When we received a call from the National Guard for additional relief supplies, we decided to put our resources to work again and answer the call," said William L. Henry, president and chief operating officer of Stroh. "We're appreciative of American National Can Company's and Weyerhaeuser Paper Company's donations and proud that we were able to work together so efficiently to respond to such a dire human need."
Stroh and ANC mobilized quickly in response to the call for additional supplies. In less than 48 hours, ANC produced the 240,000 packages at its St. Paul facility, Stroh's St. Paul Brewery converted its filling lines from beer to water and filled the cans, and 10,000 cases were loaded onto trucks for transport to Des Moines.
"Having converted the lines to water earlier this week, we knew what it would take to do it again and we were ready to fill as soon as the cans arrived from ANC," said Jeff Glynn, Stroh's St. Paul plant manager. "We're pleased to be able to make the most of our capabilities during this time of crisis."
Jack Turner, ANC president and chief operating officer of Beverage Worldwide operations, said, "We're proud to be part of this disaster- relief effort and pleased that our long-term relationship with Stroh could make a difference during a very difficult time.
"Our St. Paul employees pulled out all stops to produce the 240,000 cans for their Iowa neighbors; we commend them."
The flooding at Des Moines' water-treatment plant is expected to leave at least 250,000 homes in greater Des Moines without city drinking water for up to 30 days, but the Stroh water shipments should help satisfy many residents' immediate water needs.
Four transportation companies in the Midwest donated their time and equipment to shipping Stroh's water from St. Paul to assistance sites in Des Moines, including Transtar, Inc. of Waupaca, Wis.; Tyson Companies, Inc., of St. Paul; the St. Paul Motor Vehicle Department of the U.S. Postal Service; and the St. Paul terminal of Roadway Express, Akron, Ohio.
"This humanitarian effort would not have been possible without the voluntary assistance of these transport companies," Henry said. "The drivers worked overtime, through the night, to move the water out to the disaster site. We appreciate their partnership in this effort."
Stroh was assisted earlier this week in its effort to bottle and ship water to Des Moines by Anchor Glass Container Corp.'s operation in Shakopee, Minn.; Mark VII Transportation and M.S. Carriers, Inc., of Memphis, Tenn.; Warner Enterprises of Omaha, Neb.; and Burlington Motor Carriers, Inc., of Daleville, Ind.
"We're elated by the overwhelming support given this week to help get water to the flood victims," Henry said. "This is truly an example of teamwork in action."
American National Can Company, the world's leading can manufacturer, is based in Chicago. It operates more than 100 facilities in 13 countries.
The Stroh Brewery Company is the nation's fourth-largest brewing company. In addition to its St. Paul facility, it operates breweries in Tampa, Fla.; Winston-Salem, N.C.; Allentown, Pa.; and Longview, Texas.
