STRIKING SUCCESS! Tenpin starlet bowled over by triple medal glory.

TENPIN bowling starlet Andrew Robson knows how to strike at the opposition - as his success at a top international tournament shows.

The 17-year-old from Sunniside, Newcastle, claimed two gold medals and a silver at the Triple Crown event in Tallaght, near Dublin.

Robson, who plays for Washington Young Bowlers Club, was a member of the England squad which took on Scotland, Wales and Ireland.

It was the first time he had represented his country at under-19 team, although he previously played in the tournament at under-16 age group.

Robson struck double gold in the doubles and five-man team event and silver in the Masters competition in Dublin.

He said: "The standard of competition was quite high so I was really chuffed to win so many medals."

The youngster won his place for England after coming through a trial in Essex, where he finished in the top six out of 20 hopefuls.

Those 20 had made the trials after gaining the most points from a series of tournaments held across the country.

On his return from Ireland, Robson discovered he had qualified for trials for the England squad to compete in next Easter's European Youth Championships in Helsinki.

The first of these trials was held at Brombrough, with the second staged in Essex last weekend.

Robson was fourth-top bowler at the first qualifier and followed that up with second in last weekend's competition to comfortably make the English team.

Robson said: "I set myself a target of finishing in the top 10 at the first trial, but I eventually took fourth place, which I was delighted about.

"When I realised fourth place was on I was just so determined to get there and I played really well on the day.

"In the second qualifer I bowled well on the Saturday and was in the lead, but had a few iffy games on the Sunday.

"However, second is just as good as first in terms of qualifying, so I was delighted when I knew I had done enough to make the squad."
