STOREHOUSE TO CARRY ONLY FIRE-RETARDANT MATTRESSES.
All 63 units in the chain will start selling fire-retardant mattresses under the Storehouse label by May 1. They are beating most California retailers by several months, since those retailers are required to make the transition on Jan. 1 when the state's flammability standards take effect.
Storehouse has stores from New Jersey to Florida, throughout the South and as far west as Texas. The mattresses will be produced by Carolina Mattress Guild, a family-owned manufacturer in Thomasville, N.C. The company started making fire-retardant mattresses last year under its Safe Dreams label using VersaShield, a fire-protectant barrier from Elk Technologies.
Serta is the only national bedding manufacturer offering fire-retardant bedding at present, but virtually every other bedding manufacturer has a line at some stage of development.
"We did quite a bit of research on what is the latest and greatest in mattresses," said Dixon Bartlett, senior vice president of Storehouse. "Even though the fire retardancy at this point would not be a requirement for us, I personally think it's going to happen [nationally] eventually. And in the meantime, I'd rather be proactive about it. It certainly has a very customer-appealing safety story attached with it."
All of the mattresses are no-flip models and range in price from $699 to $1,499 retail for a queen. Materials will include viscoelastic and latex foam in pillowtop and other designs.
