STORED VALUE PUBLIC PHONES INSTALLED AT MAC NETWORK TEST SITE

PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Money Access Service Inc. (MAC) adds another component to its ongoing stored value test program with the recent installation of two public phones equipped with stored value card readers.
The phones, which are located on the second floor of the current MAC headquarters building in Philadelphia, are the latest addition to the pilot program which has seen all cash operated services in the building -- including vending machines, newspaper boxes, cafeteria services and a subway token machine -- converted to stored value card acceptance.
To operate the stored value public phones, the stored value card developed for the test program is inserted in a special reader slot. A window-reader informs the user how much value is currently on the card; once the call is placed, the caller will see the per minute charges ticking off the card.
"The public phones mark a significant step in the process of bringing stored value to the consumer public," said Donald J. Gleason, senior vice president and MAC network manager, "since this application provides us with one of the broadest bases for potential users." Gleason added that stored value public phones are already widely used throughout Europe. "We're very excited to be introducing the concept in the United States," he said.
The MAC network partnered with Bell Atlantic Corporation (NYSE: BEL) in developing the public phone stored value application. According to David Nowicki, Bell Atlantic public communications specialist, "We are constantly looking for more effective alternatives to the traditional public telephone offerings. Stored value is definitely in line with Bell Atlantic's forward looking goals in this area." Nowicki added that stored value offers the benefits of convenience for the consumer, and security for the vendor. "There will be no reason to vandalize these machines, because there will be no cash in them," he said.
The MAC system currently has 1,400 participating financial institutions in 16 states (primarily in the Middle Atlantic and Midwest regions) and 26 million cardholders. The MAC network is the leading regional ATM network for switched transactions, with approximately 21 percent of the national switched volume. It is the top ATM network in total transactions, and a leading provider of point of sale services, recording 1 billion transactions annually through 13,000 ATMs, and more than 650 million POS transactions annually through 150,000 POS data capture terminals.
MAC is a registered trademark of Money Access Service Inc., which is a subsidiary of Electronic Payment Services, Inc.
