STONE CONTAINER CORPORATION IN STRATEGIC ALLIANCE TO DEVELOP AND MARKET PACIFIC ASIA FRESH FOOD PACKAGING SYSTEM

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Oct. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Tamfresh Limited, Pacific Asia's 50 percent-owned affiliate, has entered into a supply and marketing agreement with Stone Container Corporation (NYSE: STO) of Chicago, the world's largest corrugated packaging company. The agreement provides for Stone to market TAMFRESH(TM) modified atmosphere packaging technology jointly with Tamfresh Ltd., and to supply TAMFRESH licensees with boxes and machinery to form and seal those boxes throughout the United States, Mexico and Canada.
TAMFRESH is a food handling technology which, by modifying the environment in which fresh produce is packaged, causes vegetables, fruit and flowers to "hibernate" and thus to stay fresh for significant periods of time. Modified atmosphere packaging is an entirely natural procedure which is also currently used to keep prepared salads and juices fresh. TAMFRESH was developed by Pacific Asia and its European associate, Tambox Europe Inc., in conjunction with the University of British Columbia. TAMFRESH keeps fresh produce packed in corrugated boxes in peak condition for significant periods without the use of preservatives, irradiation or genetic engineering.
A joint Stone/Tamfresh development program was started earlier this year with the establishment of a TAMFRESH Development Center at Stone's plant in Salinas, Calif. Now Stone will set up a mobile demonstration unit to package produce with the technology allowing TAMFRESH trials to be carried out anywhere in the United States. Under the terms of the agreement, Stone will appoint a project manager to supervise Stone's input to the joint TAMFRESH program and a production engineer to co-ordinate technical development with Tamfresh personnel and their own manufacturing plants and technical teams.
Fresh broccoli, packed using TAMFRESH and fully recyclable Stone corrugated boxes, has recently been launched in U.S. supermarkets where it has been well received. TAMFRESH eliminates the need for non- recyclable wax boxes and ice which are presently used for the distribution of broccoli.
The new agreement between Stone and Tamfresh will give growers and packers of fresh fruit, vegetables and flowers throughout North America access to TAMFRESH. This technology is product specific. Besides broccoli, the technology is now ready for commercial use with roses, carnations, bell peppers, sweet corn and cauliflower. Several other products are expected to be available within a few months.
A recent article in the New York Observer described the advantages of fresh squeezed orange juice being sold under the Ultimate Juice brand name to a number of prestigious New York hotels such as the Waldorf- Astoria. This new product has been developed by Ultimate's Florida associates using another of Pacific Asia's technologies, MAPTEK FRESH(TM). MAPTEK FRESH juice is being marketed to supermarkets and food service companies on both the East and West coasts of the United States.
Pacific Asia believes that its technologies offer growers the opportunity to benefit from a major advance in fresh food distribution techniques which could have an impact on the food industry similar to that of freezing in the 1950s. Some of these companies have already acquired licenses to use MAPTEK FRESH and TAMFRESH and are using these technologies with the expectation of profitable growth for their businesses in the future. One of Europe's largest produce companies, Geest, plc., has just successfully launched MAPTEK FRESH with pineapples cut and sliced in Costa Rica, transported by ship, and sold fresh in the United Kingdom; another example of the growing world interest in Pacific Asia's technologies.
