STONE & WEBSTER-CHERRY HILL UNDERTAKES CLEAN AIR'/UPGRADE PROJECTS
CHERRY HILL, N.J., Nov. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Stone & Webster announced today that it has been awarded contracts to make improvements at coal- fired power plants operated by Potomac Electric Power Company (PEPCO), Potomac Edison Company (PE) and Monongahela Power Company (Mon-Power).
Stone & Webster's Cherry Hill office will provide detailed engineering and design studies to bring PEPCO's Chalk Point Units 1 and 2, near Aquasco, Md., into compliance with the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990. A low-NOx firing system will be retrofitted to both units and provisions will be made for coal switching and/or natural gas co-firing. The selected systems also will be designed to accommodate a future FGD retrofit. The project will be completed in 1994.
The company will engineer the replacement and modernization of instruments and controls at the R. Paul Smith Station, Unit 4 in Williamsport, Md., for PE and Rivesville Station, Units 5 and 6 in Rivesville, W.Va., for Mon-Power. At the three units, conventional. pneumatic, analog control systems will be replaced by advanced distributed control technology, including systems for data acquisition. The control upgrades will be completed in the fall of 1993.
