STIMSON LANE: 1992 HARVEST -- COLUMBIA VALLEY
WOODINVILLE, Wash., Nov. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- The 1992 vintage in

Washington state was exceptional in many respects, Stimson Lane Wine & Spirits said today. The three words which best describe the year are warm, early and big.
Bud break began two weeks ahead of schedule, as most vineyards broke dormancy in late March. Bloom and fruit set kept up the advanced pace and were complete by mid-June under perfect climatic conditions. The result was what appears to be a record-breaking harvest for Washington, with more than 46,000 tons of high-quality fruit.
Beginning with veraison in late July, the advanced pace of the vintage began to slow as the vines worked to ripen the crop. But, even with the ample crop level, constant warm temperatures easily ripened the grapes. Picking began in late August, the earliest start in recent memory.
Once started, the harvest progressed rapidly. So far, 1992 appears to be the type of harvest in which both growers and vintners rejoice, yielding good vineyard productivity and good wine quality.
Early assessments of the resulting wines are favorable for both whites and reds. Doug Gore, Columbia Crest winemaker, said the red wine grapes hold particular promise because of their fruit intensity and soft tannins. Mike Januik of Chateau Ste. Michelle agreed. He cited supple structure and lack of herbaceous character as primary reasons why the warm vintages in Washington tend to produce standout red wines.
