STI EXPANDS WORLD LEADERSHIP IN AUTO-INJECTORS WITH ACQUISITION OF MEDIMECH INTERNATIONAL

ROCKVILLE, Md., Nov. 24 ~PRNewswire~ -- Survival Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: STIQ), announced today that is has expanded its world leadership in auto-injector drug delivery systems for the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries by acquiring the assets of Medimech International Limited, a designer and manufacturer of auto-injectors based in the United Kingdom.
"The acquisition establishes a marketing and manufacturing presence in the European Community (EC) to better serve multinational and local national customers, and adds important new technology that significantly expands the market potential for auto-injector drug delivery systems," said James H. Miller, president and chief executive officer of STI. "Medimech fits our primary strategy for long-term growth -- the ongoing development of new proprietary commercial auto-injectors -- and will better enable STI to fully capitalize on the growing market for these products."
Miller noted that of particular significance are patented auto- injector systems from Medimech that can store compounds in dry form and mix them in solution prior to administration. An increasing array of biotechnology products and many traditional therapies require this technology because of their limited shelf life or instability in solution.
Medimech also produces single chambered units for intramuscular and subcutaneous injection and has developed an auto-injector which utilizes a very thin (27 to 30 gauge) needle for potential new applications. In addition, Medimech provides STI with an EC-based manufacturing capability, ongoing contacts for new drug developments and potential supply agreements with governments for military auto- injectors.
Medimech will be known as STI International Limited and will serve as a base for expanded sales and marketing operations in the EC.
Originally developed by STI in the United States and widely used by the military for nerve gas antidotes during the Persian Gulf War, auto-injectors are small, pre-filled, spring-loaded medical services that permit the patient to self-inject a precise drug dosage safely and conveniently. STI is now working with a growing number of pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies in the development of new products using its exclusive auto-injector technology, and plans to announce a series of new auto-injector delivery systems in the coming months.
"The range of new drug compounds that demand safe and convenient self-injection has increased dramatically in recent years, particularly since biotechnology products can rarely be administered in traditional oral tablet form," Miller said. "As the exclusive U.S. producer of auto-injectors, we are well positioned to benefit from this trend, as well as the continuing rise in home health care and new applications in the treatment of both acute and chronic conditions."
STI delivery systems are currently used for the self- administration of drugs for anaphylaxis (severe allergic reactions), cardiac arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats) and military applications. Some of the potential new therapeutic areas for auto-injector use may include the delivery of drugs for migraine, impotence, anemia, thrombolysis (dissolving blood clots following heart attacks) and the growing number of biotechnology products requiring injection.
Survival Technology, Inc., is a technology-based health care company that designs, develops and produces automatic injectors, pre- filled syringes and medical electronics, with a major focus on safe and convenient participation by the patient in injection therapy. The company also supplies delivery system design, pharmaceutical research and development and sterile product manufacturing to major pharmaceutical companies worldwide.
