STEWART INFORMATION SERVICES CORPORATION REPORTS FINANCIAL RESULTS
HOUSTON, July 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Stewart Information Services Corporation (NASDAQ: SISC) earned $2.2 million, or $.55 per share, in the second quarter of 1992 as compared to earnings of $1.9 million, or $.46 per share, in the second quarter of 1991. Revenues in the second quarter of 1992 were the highest for any quarter in the company's history, primarily because of refinancing transactions. The increased revenues were offset in part by increased provisions for large policy losses in the second quarter of 1992.
For the first six months of 1992, Stewart earned $3.7 million, or $.91 per share, compared to a loss of $2.8 million, or $.69 per share, for the same period last year. The loss incurred last year resulted primarily from a weak real estate market dominated by the Persian Gulf War in the first quarter of 1991.
Orders for the second quarter of 1992 were up seven percent from 1991's second quarter. In comparison with year-earlier totals, orders for the month of June 1992 and the first 10 working days of July were up eight percent and 28 percent, respectively. In recent weeks interest rates have declined, leading to increased orders relating to refinancing transactions.
Stewart's primary business is title insurance. The company issues policies on homes and other real property in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Canada through over 2,800 issuing locations. In issuing a policy, the title is first searched, examined and then closed. Stewart's customers include homebuyers and sellers, attorneys, developers, lenders and real estate brokers. The company also sells computer-related services and information to the real estate industry. Additionally, the company produces digital mapping products and geographic information systems for government and private entities, both domestic and foreign.
