STEWART & STEVENSON SERVICES MAKES ANNOUNCEMENT

HOUSTON, Aug. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Stewart & Stevenson Services, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: SSSS) of Houston and Devtek Corporation of Toronto today announced the signing of a letter of intent to form an equally owned corporation to manufacture and distribute an advanced Gaseous Fuel Injection System for automobiles and light trucks. It is expected that all legal and regulatory arrangements will be completed within the near future. The new corporation, GFI Control Systems Inc.'s technology development, manufacturing and customer support operations will be located in Kitchener, Ontario.
The Fuel Injection System was originally developed in Canada, with funding from the Canadian Government, the Canadian Gas Association and others, and has been manufactured by Devtek and marketed by Stewart & Stevenson for over a year. It is the first closed loop, computer controlled Gaseous Fuel Injection System to be certified by California Air Resources Board, American Gas Association and Colorado Department of Health.
GFI Control Systems Inc. will continue to develop, manufacture, sell and service alternate fuel equipment for original equipment manufacturers and aftermarket customers worldwide. The company will also develop complementary products which are consistent with its core technology and will sell accessories and spare parts necessary to fully support the alternative fuels market.
The GFI technology reduces air pollution and operating costs, creates a new demand for domestic fuels and has wide applications for compressed natural gas, propane and liquid natural gas as fuels for automobiles, light and medium duty vehicles and heavy duty engines.
Lloyd Austin, former director, Alternative Fuels Group, for Stewart & Stevenson will become president and Satya Syngal, the former general manager of Devtek's subsidiary, which has been manufacturing the GFI systems for more than one year, will become vice president - operations for the new corporation.
"This new entity will be able to capitalize on the growing market for alternative fuel vehicles in a coordinated manner," Austin said. "We are very excited about the future of this industry because of the economic benefits and the reduction in automotive emissions that can be achieved with our technology."
Devtek is an international developer and manufacturer of systems and components for aerospace, defense, automotive and industrial markets. Stewart & Stevenson Services, Inc. is a diversified manufacturer and distributor of diesel, gas turbine and material handling equipment.
