STEWART & STEVENSON ANNOUNCE AGREEMENT WITH TRANSALTA ENERGY CORPORATION OF CANADA AND MERCURY ENERGY OF NEW ZEALAND

HOUSTON, Oct. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Stewart & Stevenson Services, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: SSSS), a leading manufacturer of diesel and gas turbine powered equipment, announced it has entered into an agreement with TransAlta Energy Corporation of Canada and Mercury Energy of New Zealand to furnish combustion turbines for a power station in Auckland, New Zealand. The project will use two Stewart & Stevenson LM6000 gas turbine generator sets as part of a 110 MW combined cycle plant design. "The Southdown Cogeneration Station" will supply electricity to the city of Auckland and steam to local industrial customers allowing them to shut down less efficient steam plants. The gas turbine generator sets will be assembled and tested at full power at Stewart & Stevenson's factory prior to shipment in early 1995.
In an unrelated project, Stewart & Stevenson has been awarded a contract by Bechtel Petroleum Operations, Inc., for two LM2500 gas turbine generator sets, each rated at 22 MW. The generator sets will be factory tested at full power and delivered to the U.S. Department of Energy's Elk Hills Naval Reserve in Tupman, Calif.
Exhaust from the turbines will be used to produce steam to heat and process oil at the petroleum reserve. Most of the electricity produced will be utilized at Elk Hills and the balance sold to Pacific Gas & Electric Company. The turbines will be placed into service during 1994.
The total value of the equipment and related services for the two projects is approximately $45 million. Since 1981, Stewart & Stevenson has delivered more than 150 GE gas turbine generators to jobsites throughout the world.
