STEVEN C. MASON ELECTED CHAIRMAN, CEO OF MEAD
DAYTON, Ohio, April 23 /PRNewswire/ -- The directors of the Mead

Corporation (NYSE: MEA) today elected Steven C. Mason chairman of the board and chief executive officer, effective May 6, 1992. This action, which affirmed the board's previously declared intention to elect Mason to the top executive post, was announced at Mead's annual meeting of share owners here today.
Mason, 56, is currently vice chairman of the board and a 35-year veteran of Mead. A member of the board since 1982, Mason served as president and chief operating officer of the corporation from 1982 to 1991.
Mason will replace Burnell R. Roberts, who retires as chairman and chief executive officer, a position he has held since April 1982. Roberts, who was elected to the board in 1981, will continue as a director.
In announcing Mason's election to Mead's share owners, Roberts said, "Steve Mason can claim a broad background and varied experience at Mead -- literally, having been involved in every business we operate. The company has benefited from his leadership as president and vice chairman during the past 10 years, and I know he will do an outstanding job, together with Mead's president Sam Benedict, in heading up a very capable management team."
Samuel S. Benedict will continue as president and chief operating officer of the corporation. Benedict was named president and chief operating officer in April 1991 and elected to the board in November 1991.
Mason joined Mead's white paper operations in 1957, where he worked in various engineering, manufacturing and product development areas. In the 1970s, he served as general manager of Schoeller Technical Papers, Inc., a former Mead affiliate; vice president of marketing for Mead's Specialty Paper division; and director of Mead Central Research Laboratories. He was named executive vice president of Mead's Paperboard group in 1975, then president of the group in 1978. He was later named group vice president of Mead's Paper and Paperboard groups. He was named senior vice president of operations for the entire company in 1981.
Mason was graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering in 1957. He completed the Management Development Program at the Harvard Business School in 1973.
Currently a member of the board of trustees of the Institute of Paper Science and Technology, Mason is a director of PPG Industries Inc. and the Duriron Company.
Mead is a leader in forest products and electronic publishing, based in Dayton, Ohio.
