STEVE SANGHI ASSUMES ADDITIONAL POSITION OF CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD OF MICROCHIP TECHNOLOGY

 CHANDLER, Ariz., Oct. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Microchip Technology Inc. (NASDAQ: MCHP) announced today that Steve Sanghi, president and chief executive officer of the company, has been elected to the additional position of chairman of the board. In related developments, Jack Beedle has been elected a director, and Donald T. Valentine and Paul S. Brentlinger have resigned as directors. Beedle is the founder and president of IN-STAT Inc., a leading high technology market research firm; Valentine, former chairman of the board, is a general partner in the venture capital firm of Sequoia Capital; and Brentlinger is a general partner in the venture capital firm of Morgenthaler Ventures.
 The resignations of Valentine and Brentlinger represent the completion of the tenures of the five individuals who were affiliated with the company's original venture capital investors. Similar to many other successful high technology companies, Microchip is moving toward a board of directors with independent industry executive officers. Sanghi stated, "We are grateful for the contributions that Don, Paul and the representatives of our other venture capital investors have made to the success of the company and appreciate the confidence and support which they have exhibited over their tenure. We believe that Microchip's management team will continue to justify their confidence."
