STERLING WINTHROP'S STERLING ORGANICS WINS THREE TOP HEALTH AND SAFETY AWARDS IN THE UK

NEW YORK, Feb. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Sterling Winthrop Inc. announced today that Sterling Organics, its bulk pharmaceuticals manufacturing unit, has been named the recipient of a special United Kingdom (UK) National Training Award for health and safety training programs implemented at its Dudley and Fawdon, United Kingdom, sites. The program has been selected as the UK's entry in the competition to find the premier program among European Community countries.
In addition, Sterling Organics won two other awards, one for occupational and hygiene training and the other for overall training strategy. Sterling Organics has now been honored six times in four years under the National Training Awards program. The training programs have been part of a broader strategy at Sterling Organics to modernize and expand the contribution that training can make to business success. Since 1987, training per person per year has increased from 3.5 hours to 40 hours.
"This award recognizes the world-class safety standards the people of our Dudley and Fawdon plants have set, and is significant recognition of their hard work and commitment to our values. We are tremendously proud of their accomplishments," said Louis P. Mattis, chairman of Sterling Winthrop Inc.
"The people of Sterling Organics have demonstrated how the Sterling Winthrop values of continuous improvement and acting responsibly can come to fruition," said Mattis, "and have moved us a significant step forward toward our goal of becoming a world leader in this industry."
The 1992 special award was presented in London today by Sir John Cullen, chairman of the UK's Health and Safety Commission, and accepted by Alan Clark, managing director, Sterling Organics.
Sterling Organics employs approximately 900 people at four sites: Dudley and Fawdon, UK; Rensselaer, N.Y.; and Barceloneta, Puerto Rico, in the development and manufacture of active ingredients for medicines.
Sterling Winthrop Inc., headquartered in New York City, is a global developer, manufacturer and marketer of pharmaceutical and consumer health products.
