STERLING CHEMICALS ELECTS BOARD, OFFICERS

 HOUSTON, Jan. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Shareholders of Sterling Chemicals, Inc. (NYSE: STX) today elected its board of directors.
 Re-elected to the board were: Gordon A. Cain, chairman of the board of The Sterling Group, Inc. and chairman of Sterling Chemicals, Inc.; J. Virgil Waggoner, president and chief executive officer of Sterling Chemicals, Inc.; James J. Kerley, retired vice chairman, Emerson Electric Co.; William A. McMinn, chairman, Arcadian Corporation; and Gilbert M.A. Portal, secretary general, European Petroleum Industry Association. Frank J. Pizzitola, general partner, Lazard Freres, and Raymond R. Knowland, retired managing director of The British Petroleum Company PLC, were both appointed to the Sterling board in 1992 to fill vacancies and have been elected by shareholders at the annual meeting.
 In other business, shareholders ratified the appointment of Coopers & Lybrand as independent auditors for the fiscal year ending Sept. 30, 1993.
 Following the shareholders meeting, directors elected the following officers: J. Virgil Waggoner, president and chief executive officer; Robert W. Roten, vice president--corporate development; J. David Heaney, vice president--finance and chief financial officer; Richard K. Crump, vice president--commercial; and Robert N. Bannon, vice president-- operations.
 Sterling Chemicals is a major producer of seven intermediate petrochemical products - styrene monomer, acrylonitrile, acetic acid, plasticizers, lactic acid, tertiary butylamine and sodium cyanide. The company also produces sodium chlorate at four plants and sodium chlorite at one plant, all in Canada, and licenses and constructs large-scale chlorine dioxide generators for use by the pulp industry. The company is headquartered in Houston. The company's stock trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol STX.
