STERLING BANK PROMOTES KAREN A. WHARTON TO SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT CORPORATE COMMUNICATIONS AND STRATEGIC PLANNING

 WALTHAM, Mass., Sept. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Sterling Bank, a wholly- owned subsidiary of Sterling Bancshares Corporation (NASDAQ: STLG), announced today that Karen A. Wharton, 39, was promoted to senior vice president of corporate communications and strategic planning.
 Wharton joined Sterling in 1987 as director of investor relations advancing to assistant vice president of investor relations and strategic planning in 1990 and vice president in 1991. She is a graduate of Boston College and received her Masters in Communication Management from Simmons College. In addition, she serves as secretary/treasurer of the Boston Chapter of the National Investor Relations Institute and as trustee of the Charles River Museum of Industry in Waltham. She is a resident of Chelmsford.
 Sterling Bank has assets of $968 million and offers a comprehensive line of business and personal banking services at its 13 offices located in nine communities in Midddlesex County.
