STERLING BANK PROMOTES CHRISTOPHER H. GARDNER SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT -- FUNDS MANAGEMENT

 WALTHAM, Mass., Sept. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Sterling Bank, a wholly owned subsidiary of Sterling Bancshares Corporation (NASDAQ: STLG), announced today that Christopher H. Gardner, 33, was promoted to senior vice president of Funds Management.
 Gardner joined Sterling in 1989 as money market officer, advancing to assistant vice president in December 1989 and vice president in 1991. Prior to joining Sterling, he was with Shawmut Bank for three and a half years as an investment officer. Gardner is a graduate of St. Bonaventure University and New England School of Banking at Williams College. In addition, he received his Masters in Business Administration from Northeastern University. He is a resident of Manchester, Mass.
 Sterling Bank has assets of $968 million and offers a comprehensive line of business and personal banking services at its 13 offices located in nine communities in Middlesex County.
