STEPHEN G. CARPENTER APPOINTED CEO OF CALIFORNIA UNITED BANK AND
ACTING PRESIDENT AND CEO OF CU BANCORP
ENCINO, Calif., June 3 /PRNewswire/ -- The board of directors of CU Bancorp (NASDAQ: CUBN) today announced the appointment of Stephen G. Carpenter, 52, as chief executive officer of California United Bank, N.A., and as acting president and chief executive officer of its parent company, CU Bancorp, pending regulatory review.
Carpenter replaces John J. Keating, who resigned as an officer of CU Bancorp and California United Bank on June 2. Keating remains with the company as a consultant.
Melvin Gagerman, board chairman of CU Bancorp, said, "The board of directors spent considerable time evaluating the qualifications of several senior bankers and Steve Carpenter came out far on top. He has a reputation throughout California as a team-oriented builder of banking franchises who has a demonstrated facility for enhancing profitability."
Carpenter, who has spent 29 years in the banking industry, has been vice chairman of Security Pacific's middle market bank since 1989. In this capacity he built loan outstandings to $2.6 billion by adding over 450 commercial relationships throughout the division's 15 statewide regions. He also directed the bank's private banking unit and recently had oversight responsibility for Security Pacific's workout and asset sale area.
From 1980 to 1989 Carpenter held senior positions with Wells Fargo Bank in Los Angeles where he was primarily responsible for all of the middle market banking activities in southern California.
Carpenter began his banking career with the then First National Bank of Boston in 1962, progressing through its bank training program and serving as a loan officer in the retail and corporate banking divisions until 1973. During the period 1973 to 1979 he was with FNB Financial Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of the First National Bank of Boston. He first served in Atlanta and then in Los Angeles where he was vice president and office manager and responsible for managing the asset based lending, factoring, floor planning and stock transfer activities.
Carpenter is a 1962 graduate of Colby College, Waterville, Maine, and the Stonier Graduate School of Banking, New Brunswick, N.J.
CU Bancorp and its subsidiary California United Bank, N.A. operate branches in Encino and Beverly Hills and a loan production office in Costa Mesa and offer a full range of commercial banking services to middle market businesses, the entertainment industry and high net worth individuals in southern California, as well as mortgage banking throughout California.
