STEPHEN A. ROSS ELECTED DIRECTOR OF GENERAL RE

 STAMFORD, Conn., Feb. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Ronald E. Ferguson, chairman of General Re Corporation (NYSE: GRN), today announced the election of Stephen A. Ross, a distinguished scholar, author and recognized business leader, to the corporation's board of directors. "Steve has made considerable contributions in the fields of economics and finance over the years; his diverse background and extensive financial experience will be a great asset to the corporation, and we are looking forward to working with him."
 A member of the faculty of Yale University since 1977, Mr. Ross is currently Sterling Professor of Economics and Finance, a position he has held since 1985. He is also co-chairman of Roll & Ross Asset Management Corporation, managing director of WP Capital Management, L.P. and a director of the College Retirement Equity Fund.
 During his tenure at Yale, he has published numerous articles and books, including co-authoring "Corporate Finance," now in its third edition, and "Fundamentals of Corporate Finance," 1991. He is the recipient of numerous awards and grants, including: the Graham and Dodd Award for excellence in financial writing from the Financial Analysts Journal (1984); the Leo Melamed Prize for best research by a business school professor from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business; and the Pomerance Prize for Excellence in the Area of Options Research from the Chicago Board of Trade (1978). He became a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in May 1987 and fellow of the Econometric Society in 1979.
 A native of Boston, Mr. Ross graduated with honors from the California Institute of Technology in 1965 with a B.S. in physics, and earned a Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University in 1969. He serves on the editorial board of the Journ editor for a number of publications, including the Journal of Finance and the Journal of Economic Theory.
