STEPHEN'S GREEN DREAM IS CLOSE.

Byline: PAUL O'HEHIR

STEPHEN GLEESON is 'not a million miles away' from an Ireland recall.

The Birmingham City midfielder (left) won two caps under Steve Staunton in 2007 when an under-strength Irish squad toured America.

He has not featured since then but Martin O'Neill went to watch him at the weekend and Gleeson scored in the 5-2 demolition of Fulham at Craven Cottage O'Neill said: "He's a nice little footballer. I've seen him before. You could name me another three or four players who are not a million miles away from my thoughts."

O'Neill also watched Fulham's Richard Stearman in that game, the defender who is eligible for Ireland.

Speaking generally of alternative options in the future, O'Neill said: "I genuinely could not rule anything out.

"Getting someone in, having not been around the place before, that might be difficult for them.

"Hence why I've brought, for instance, young Eunan O'Kane and Alan Judge in so when they do step in, I'd have less of a problem throwing someone into a really important game."
