            STEPAN COMPANY ANNOUNCES PERSONNEL CHANGES
    NORTHFIELD, Ill., Dec. 17 -- Stepan Company (AMEX: SCL) today


announced the following personnel changes:
    William W. Meier, senior vice president-finance and administration and member of the board of directors, is retiring from the company and the board as of Dec. 31, 1991.  Walter J. Klein will assume the position of vice president-finance and chief financial officer.  Previously Klein held the position of vice president and controller.
    Charles P. Riley Jr. will assume the position of vice president- Administration and Regulatory Affairs.  Riley previously held the position of vice president-Manufacturing and Engineering.
    Henry Mork will assume the position of vice president Manufacturing and Engineering.  Mork previously held the position of vice president- plant operations, in the Manufacturing and Engineering department. Mickey Mirghanbari will assume the position of vice president-Plant Operations in the Manufacturing and Engineering department.  Previously Mirghanbari held the position of vice president-Millsdale Operations. Anthony J. Zoglio has joined the company as plant manager at Millsdale, Ill.
    Stepan Company, headquartered in Northfield, is a leading producer of basic and intermediate chemicals used in household, industrial, personal care, agricultural and energy-related products.
