STEELWORKERS-INLAND STEEL TENTATIVE CONTRACT BALLOT-COUNT DELAYED

EAST CHICAGO, Ind., June 22 /PRNewswire/ -- The United Steelworkers of America announced today that it has delayed the count of the ratification ballots for its tentative contract with the Inland Steel Co. because of unresolved accounting and technical issues which arose in the compiling of the agreement documents.
Approximately 9,000 members of Local Union 1010 at the company's Indiana Harbor Works in East Chicago, Ind., and Local Union 6115, at the company's Minorca iron ore mine in Virginia, Minn., would be covered by the agreement and are eligible to vote.
The ratification vote is being conducted by mail ballot and the ballots will continue to be held at the East Chicago, Ind. and Duluth, Minn., post offices. The vote count will be rescheduled when the outstanding accounting and technical issues are satisfactorily resolved.
USWA District 31 Director Jack Parton, chairman of the union's negotiating committee said: "While we are confident these issues will be quickly and satisfactorily resolved, we will not proceed with the count until the agreement we reached with the company, and which we explained to our members, is properly reflected in the written documents."
