STEELWORKERS RATIFY NEW CONTRACT WITH BETHLEHEM STEEL

PITTSBURGH, Aug. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Members of the United Steelworkers of America (USWA) employed by Bethlehem Steel Corp. (NYSE: BS) today overwhelmingly ratified a ground-breaking six-year contract that provides guaranteed employment security and gives workers a strong voice in company decision-making, including a seat on the Bethlehem board of directors, the union announced today.
The count of mail ballots tallied 7,257 to approve the contract and 917 opposed, a margin of 89 percent for ratification.
The contract covers more than 10,500 USWA members at Bethlehem plants at Burns Harbor, Ind., Lackawanna, N.Y., and Sparrows Point, Md. Benefits provisions of the contract also apply to 5,000 members at Bethlehem facilities in Bethlehem and Steelton, Pa., who previously settled with the company on economic and other matters.
John H. Reck, director of USWA District 7 and chairman of the USWA negotiating committee, and David Wilson, director of USWA District 8, the committee secretary, said the contract will benefit both union members and the company.
"This vote shows that our members strongly supported the International union's 'New Directions' bargaining policy," Reck and Wilson said in a joint statement.
"In addition to improving wages, pensions and benefits, the agreement recognizes the vital role our members can play within their company," Reck and Wilson added. "By guaranteeing our members' jobs and giving them a voice at all levels of the company, this contract will greatly improve labor-management relations and help make Bethlehem a more progressive and profitable company."
