STEELWORKERS FIRST UNION TO SUBMIT ORGANIZING PETITION
ON BEHALF OF USAIR FLEET SERVICE WORKERS
PITTSBURGH, April 28 /PRNewswire/ -- The United Steelworkers of America (USW) announced today it was the first union to file petitions with the National Mediation Board in its bid to become the exclusive bargaining agent for 8,000 fleet service workers employed nationwide by USAir.
The USW is involved in an organizing drive to represent the USAir fleet service workers, whose jobs include baggage handling, catering, shipping and others, at more than 100 locations.
The USW entered the picture in December 1990, at the request of workers at USAir's Pittsburgh terminal -- its largest -- following a failed effort by another union.
George Becker, USW International vice president for administration who is heading the campaign, said 95 percent of the 1,100 USAir Pittsburgh employees had signed union authorization cards seeking USW representation.
"The USW has much to offer the USAir workers," Becker said, "including our nationwide structure that gives them access to USW representatives wherever they work." Becker said USW locals in 19 districts across the United States are involved in the organizing effort.
The National Mediation Board administers union representation elections under the National Railway Labor Act. The campaign is expected to run several months before an election is held.
