STEELWORKERS APPROVE NEW PACT WITH RAVENSWOOD ALUMINUM
RAVENSWOOD, W.Va., June 12 /PRNewswire/ -- The United Steelworkers of America (USWA) said that members of USWA Local Union 5668 voted overwhelmingly today to accept a new three-year contract with the Ravenswood Aluminum Corporation (RAC), ending a long and bitter lockout and claiming back their jobs from scab workers.
The vote was 1,287 in favor and 181 against. Two other ballots were voided.
Immediately after the vote was announced, at 2 p.m., USWA leaders, including Vice President George Becker, District 23 Director Jim Bowen and Local 5668 President Dan Stidham went to the two picket stations near the RAC plant and officially ended the lockout by removing the picket lines.
The Local 5668 members are to return to work on June 29, the date the new contract is to take effect.
The USWA said the lockout began Nov. 1, 1990, when the company refused a union offer to extend the previous agreement, ordered 1,700 Steelworkers out of the plant, and brought in the scabs.
The union said the big break in the settlement occurred April 21, 1992, when a reconstituted board of directors fired R. Emmett Boyle as chairman and chief executive officer and asked the union to resume talks with the goal of reaching a quick settlement. Tentative agreement was reached May 27, and the members began voting last week. The secret, mail-ballot votes were counted today.
The contract calls for a $2,000 payment to every Steelworker who was affected by the lockout. It also increases wages by $1.25 over the three years, and has a "progress sharing" plan to further reimburse the workers for their losses during the lockout.
