STEELWORKERS AND ISPAT OFFICIALS IN FOUR-HOUR MEETING; ISPAT TO CONTACT UNION NEXT WEEK

WASHINGTON, March 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Top officials of the United Steelworkers of America (USWA) and the Ispat Group met here today for four hours, with each side reiterating its position on the contract talks aimed at re-opening the Bar, Rod and Wire Division of Bethlehem Steel Corp.
The union stood firm with its final proposal to Ispat, which the company rejected on Feb. 18. Before today's meeting ended, the company agreed to contact the union again next week to determine if further talks are warranted.
Representing the USWA were International President Lynn R. Williams; Andrew V. Palm, director of USWA District 15 and the union's chief negotiator with Ispat; and Bernard Kleiman, the union's general counsel.
The Ispat representatives were B.C. Mittal, Ispat's vice-chairman and member of the family that owns the company; B.C. Agarwal, president of Ispat Mexicana, the subsidiary negotiating the purchase of the facility from Bethlehem; T.N. Ramaswamy, and attorney William Doepkin of Pittsburgh, Ispat's American representative in the talks with the union.
